01 · Frame the problem
Decide which URL should win
List every reachable URL variant, then compare redirects, canonical declarations, internal links and sitemap entries. The preferred URL should be consistent across those signals.
02 · Collect evidence
Use the smallest test that answers the question
A secure server fetch follows a bounded redirect path, parses the final HTML, response headers, robots directives and canonical elements, then normalizes equivalent URLs.
- Keep the original URL, file or text unchanged.
- Record the settings used for the check.
- Run the test once before making changes.
- Save an export only when an audit trail is useful.
Canonical tags are hints, not royal decrees. Contradictory redirects and links can outvote them.
03 · Interpret
Read the evidence before the recommendation
Requested URL, final URL, canonical target, index directives, consistency verdict and evidence panel. Errors separate fetch, parse, permission and unsupported content cases.

Repeat the same check after one change
Change one cause, preserve the test conditions and compare the new result with the baseline. This makes the conclusion explainable and avoids crediting the last click for every improvement on the page.
What Canonical Inspector cannot prove
The tool reports observable behavior from the supplied input. It cannot establish private intent, predict future platform behavior or replace a specialist review where legal, security or financial risk is high.
